The company received the award in two categories of the competition: "Rookie of the Year," which is bestowed upon the most promising up-and-coming company, as well as Technology Innovator, which is conferred upon the company with the most promising technology. The awards will be given out in a ceremony at MIT on Tuesday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m., and will be broadcast live over the Internet on www.mitawards.org. "We are honored by MIT's recognition and by being associated with other finalists of such high caliber," said George Conrades, Akamai's Chairma n and CEO. "As eCommerce becomes increasingly important in the global economy, Akamai's leadership in providing Internet content distribution services will play a crucial role."

Founded last year by a group of world-class mathematicians and experience Internet business professionals, Akamai offers an Internet content delivery service. Akamai received more than $8-million in initial financing in late 1998, led by Battery Ventures, based in Wellesley, Mass, and Polaris Venture Partners, based in Boston and Seattle.
