CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, August 11, 1999 -- Akamai Technologies, which operates a global Internet content delivery service that speeds up Web performance, announced today the appointment of Daniel E. Smith to its Board of Advisors. Currently president and CEO of Sycamore Networks, Mr. Smith joins Akamai's advisory board consisting of influential members of the Internet, networking, science and entertainment industries.

Formed in May of this year, Akamai's advisory board provides counsel and direction on developing technology standards, business strategy, and products and services that continue to push the Internet, and delivery of Web content, to new levels of performance and reliability.

"We are excited to welcome a very dynamic individual who has made a demonstrable difference through his role in building and leading world-class organizations," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO of Akamai. "Dan brings valuable experience to the Akamai advisory board for advancing the growth, performance and reliability of the Internet. His keen view of today's Web and networking markets will be instrumental to the ongoing development of Akamai's business strategy."

Working together to examine and recommend solutions for the development and performance issues facing the Internet, Mr. Smith joins other prestigious Akamai Board of Advisors members, including:

  • Tim Berners-Lee, director of the World Wide Web Consortium;
  • Gil Friesen, director of The Digital Entertainment Network, and a media pioneer;
  • Sam Gassel, chief systems engineer, CNN Internet Technologies;
  • Ron Graham, chief scientist emeritus, AT&T Labs, and treasurer of the National Academy of Sciences;
  • Amos Hostetter, founder of Continental Cablevision;
  • Peter Solvik, senior vice president and CIO of Cisco Systems;
  • Ralph Terkowitz, CIO of The Washington Post Company.
Mr. Smith, widely recognized as a networking industry leader, is president and CEO of Sycamore Networks, a privately held company focused on developing end-to-end optical networking products. Sycamore Networks has been recognized by FORTUNE Magazine as one of the "12 Cool Companies for 1999," and by Red Herring and UPSIDE magazines as one of the top 100 private companies. Prior to Sycamore, Smith was president and CEO of Cascade Communications. Under his leadership, Cascade grew to become a worldwide leader in the frame relay market, and was acquired by Ascend Communications in June 1997. Smith has also been honored in Forbes Magazine as one of "High Tech's 30 Most Powerful CEOs."

Commented Smith, "Akamai is transforming Web networking technology. The company's global network, by placing content close to Internet users, ensures that Web requests don't have to travel long distances. The result is an innovative approach to relieving Web congestion."
