Established as a long-term initiative, the technology partners behind NetAid have launched a robust Web site (www.netaid.org) that enables people to learn about and take action against poverty. NetAid's efforts will also be highlighted by three live concerts taking place on October 9, 1999, featuring David Bowie, Bono, Wyclef Jean and Jewel, to name a few. The concerts will be Webcast live by Cisco and RealNetworks at www.netaid.org, and Akamai's network partners will donate the bandwidth to support the significant traffic anticipated before, during, and after the concerts. The NetAid Web site is designed to handle 60 million hits per hour.
Akamai has built a worldwide network for fast and reliable Internet content delivery. By the time of the NetAid concerts, Akamai's network will encompass 1,200 servers in 90 data centers around the globe. Akamai's network monitors and routes around Internet traffic congestion in real-time.
"NetAid is a collaborative event, with each technology sponsor and network provider playing an important role in ensuring that www.netaid.org reaches and can support a truly global audience," said Jonathan Seelig, vice president of Strategy and Corporate Development at Akamai. "In addition to playing a vital part in the deployment of Akamai's network, each of these providers should be commended for their donation of bandwidth in support of NetAid's cause."
"NetAid is an opportunity to showcase the power of the Internet for live, high-bandwidth global communications on an unprecedented scale. AboveNet is proud to offer its high performance network as a part of this worthy cause to fight poverty and hunger," said David Rand, chief technology officer and co-founder of AboveNet. "The Internet will make it possible for millions of people around the world to be touched and inspired by this monumental event."
