Akamai to Deliver High Quality Broadband Digital Media
Akamai's FreeFlow service delivers rich content from a global network of servers that Akamai operates. When an Internet user requests streaming media content from a Web site served by Akamai, Akamai's patent-pending technology identifies the best source for serving the content from Akamai's global network, routing around Internet congestion. By delivering streamed content from the optimal server rather than from the Web site owner's centralized site, Akamai's intelligent network improves a Web site's performance and the customer's experience when viewing the CD-quality audio and near-broadcast quality video of Windows Media.
This technology is important because Internet congestion and packet loss often result in jumpy, poor quality multimedia, even when using broadband connections. Users today often see this problem, even with corporate networks or home connections. Akamai, together with Microsoft Windows Media Technologies, raises multimedia quality to levels that consumers demand.
"Akamai's FreeFlow service provides broadband customers with the technology that will allow for the reliable and scalable delivery of rich streaming content," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO of Akamai. "Akamai's unique content delivery service combined with Windows Media Technologies' high quality video and audio support and scalability makes us a key contributor to the Windows Media Broadband JumpStart initiative."
"The successful establishment of the next generation broadband Internet depends on the cross-industry cooperation started today with the Windows Media Broadband JumpStart initiative," said Will Poole general manager, Marketing and Business Development, Streaming Media Division, Microsoft Corp. "Akamai's unique content delivery service is a critical component of this effort to help accelerate broadband adoption for consumers and content providers."
In addition to today's news, Microsoft and Akamai announced earlier this week their strategic relationship to enhance Internet content delivery including Akamai's integration of Windows Media Technologies and Windows-based servers into its global network. The announcement also detailed Microsoft's investment in Akamai.
