RadicalMail to Incorporate Akamai's FreeFlowSM Streaming Media Delivery Service

MARINA DEL REY, CA and CAMBRIDGE, MA - April 5, 2000 - RadicalMail, the inventor of interactive and streaming multimedia e-mail, and Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media, and applications, announced today that the two companies have teamed to speed the delivery of streaming multimedia. RadicalMail will incorporate Akamai's FreeFlowSM Streaming service to enhance the delivery of rich audio, video and other engaging content for RadicalMail email deployments.

With estimates expecting an explosion in the amount of commercial emails sent over the coming years, RadicalMail's use of Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service will enable marketers to benefit from richer and more reliable multimedia e-mail technology. As stated in a January 2000 Forrester Research report: "by 2004, marketers will send more than 200 billion emails annually in the U.S. Email marketing service providers will deliver the technology and expertise to support a new relationship between marketers and their customers."

"Balancing the server load of millions of streaming emails demands a comprehensive and reliable network," said Robert Strack, RadicalMail's president and founder. "Akamai provides a valuable piece to the puzzle, reliably solving the problems associated with widespread streaming email deployments." "Akamai's global network of servers will further enhance RadicalMail's ability to stream email quickly and efficiently, deliver rich content, and improve the user experience," said Dan Fraisl, vice president and general manager of streaming at Akamai. "Email has until now been relegated to a mostly text only existence. RadicalMail is changing that; transforming email into an interactive and richer medium."

RadicalMail seamlessly streams audio, graphics and video directly into the body of an email without requiring a plug-in, attaching an executable file, or launching a web browser. Instead, the company utilizes an ultralight Java applet to stream the audio or video message immediately upon opening. In addition, RadicalMail offers its clients real-time tracking capabilities, letting them know when the audience received the stream and if they forwarded the message. The technology also allows for interactive upstream data collection directly in the body of the email, including secure e-commerce transactions.

The Akamai network has already streamed hundreds of thousands of emails for RadicalMail including campaigns for Warner Brothers, ZiffDavis, Nickelodeon, and the Forbes2000 Presidential Campaign.
