During peak days of virus strike, Akamai serves whopping 500% increase in traffic for McAfee.com

CAMBRIDGE, MA and SANTA CLARA, CA - May 8, 2000 -- Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of interactive Internet content, streaming media, and Internet applications, and McAfee.com (NASDAQ:MCAF), the world's leading consumer application service provider of PC security and management services, today announced that together, their services helped resolve issues resulting from the ILOVEYOU virus that began invading millions of email systems last Thursday. Through the use of Akamai's FreeFlowSM service, McAfee.com handled record-breaking traffic to its site, which includes critical information, updates and downloadable protection files, for the ILOVEYOU virus.

McAfee.com uses FreeFlow for the delivery of over 50% of its online virus protection applications and its rich web content. FreeFlow has been instrumental in protecting McAfee.com from the flash crowds it has been receiving since Thursday as a result of the ILOVEYOU virus. During the first 24 hours after the virus struck, McAfee.com began receiving massive amounts of traffic from visitors who were in search of protection. With the FreeFlow service in place, McAfee.com supported a record-breaking 4.6 million hits to its Web site. McAfee.com's virus signature files, which contain protection from the virus, were also heavily accessed on Thursday. FreeFlow enabled McAfee.com to quickly and reliably deliver more than 500,000 downloads of virus protection software files that first day.

"Akamai was a critical component for McAfee.com during the chaotic days of the ILOVEYOU virus," said Doug Cavit, vice president of information technology, McAfee.com. "The powerful combination of Akamai's service with our highly scalable architecture allowed us to handle with ease the unprecedented spikes in traffic that amounted to more than five times the normal average. Our users are thrilled with the reliable service and support they've gotten from McAfee.com throughout this ordeal. What can I say? We love Akamai."

"Dealing with this virus has been a successful joint effort on the part of both Akamai and McAfee.com," said Earl Galleher, vice president, worldwide sales and support, Akamai. "This is just one of the many examples where Akamai's peak crowd protection paid off immensely. We are happy to have helped McAfee.com ensure that its end users were able to access their site, irregardless of the traffic demand, and download virus protection quickly and reliably."

In addition to the performance increases that FreeFlow brought to McAfee.com, the company saw great value in Akamai's Traffic Analyzer tool. "On Thursday evening, Akamai's Traffic Analyzer tool provided us with detailed, useful information from the events of the day, enabling us to determine from which of our files the highest percentage of traffic was coming. As a result, we were able to plan for the changes in capacity and bandwidth necessary for the remaining days in which the virus was still present, allowing us to continue to bring our customers top-notch service," Cavit added.
