Akamai Accelerates Edge Deployment with Expanded ISP Offerings
"By expanding our AANP program to a wider group of ISPs, Akamai is accelerating the pace by which we deploy servers at the edge of the Internet while increasing Akamai's value proposition to ISPs," said Avi Freedman, Akamai's vice president of network architecture. "As we add potentially thousands of additional networks to our global footprint, we are furthering the unprecedented scalability, reliability and performance of our content delivery capabilities."
Announced earlier this week at ISPCON, Loral CyberStar will make available free Usenet newsfeeds to all ISPs within the Akamai Accelerated Network Partner program. ISPs can now off-load the high volumes of Usenet traffic, freeing up as much as 12 Mbps of network connectivity.
With today's news, Akamai has also outlined plans to provide ISPs with weekly data reports that will enable ISPs to analyze their network's performance. Akamai will use a series of advanced network monitoring and performance tools to conduct analyses within the following two areas:
Network Monitoring
To date, Akamai has attracted ISPs from around the world as part of its program to co-locate Akamai edge servers within ISP points-of-presence (POPs). By placing servers close to end users inside an ISP network, Akamai enables ISPs to reduce the amount of bandwidth needed to deliver requested Web pages including rich content, streaming media and software downloads. As a result, much of the world's most popular content, from hundreds of heavily-trafficked Web sites using Akamai's service, will reside in an ISP's network.
"Akamai has very clever technology that is easy to implement," said Randall Plaisier CTO, COM NET, Inc. "Our servers were up and running in no time. Over time we have experienced reduction in costs and improved service. It has actually improved our profile in the marketplace."
Akamai's Accelerated Network Partners have been instrumental to the expansion of Akamai's global network, which is growing at an average rate of 200 Web servers per month.

The release contains information about future expectations, plans and prospects of Akamai's management that constitute forward-looking statements for purposes of the safe harbor provisions under The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. Actual results may differ materially from those indicated by these forward-looking statements as a result of various important factors including, but not limited to, the dependence on Akamai's Internet content delivery service, a failure of Akamai's network infrastructure, the failure of Akamai to rapidly grow its footprint, the complexity of its service and the networks on which the service is deployed, the failure to obtain access to transmission capacity and other factors that are discussed in the Company's Annual Report on Form 10-K and other documents periodically filed with the SEC

Network Monitoring
- Amount of inbound and outbound traffic served
- Real and historical data on server performance
- 95th percentile and average bandwidth utilization (allows ISPs to monitor bandwidth savings and improve dynamic mapping configuration)
- ISP performance in relation to back-bone networks
- Measurement of end user connectivity to back-bone networks
- Evaluation of points within the Network where additional bandwidth is needed
