Akamai to deliver first-ever live Internet coverage of MTV's premiere awards event to a global audience

Cambridge, MA, September 7, 2000 - Akamai Technologies, Inc., (NASDAQ: AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high-performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media, and applications, today announced that The MTVi Group has selected Akamai as its streaming delivery provider for live coverage of the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards on MTV.com scheduled for this evening at 8 p.m. EDT.

MTVi's Digital Media Platform, the streaming media and Internet radio platform deployed across MTVi's network of online destinations, specifically chose Akamai to stream coverage of the annual awards gala based on Akamai's proven expertise in executing large-scale online live webcasts and its ability to provide great end-user experiences.

To provide the best streaming experience possible for its viewers, MTVi required the services of a leading streaming solutions provider that could manage the event from end to end. Using Akamai's FreeFlowSM Streaming service, MTV.com will stream an original online production of MTV's most popular event. Akamai will also provide on-site encoding and signal acquisition services as well as content delivery services and reporting capabilities.

"Akamai is excited to have a strategic role in MTV.com's online production of the MTV Video Music Awards, one of the most prominent music entertainment events," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO, Akamai. "MTV pioneered music videos for television, and now, with its first-ever online coverage of the video music awards, is further expanding the reach of this gala event to the broad scope of the web. We are thrilled to be associated with MTV.com as a partner in its landmark event."

"Akamai is the perfect fit to stream one of MTV.com's most important online events of the year," said Nicholas Butterworth, president and CEO, The MTVi Group. "The seventeenth annual MTV Video Music Awards will be a unique on-air/online experience for our viewers that will take them inside one of the biggest music awards shows of the season."

MTVi will leverage Akamai's services to provide its online viewers with a unique experience, including views from the red carpet entranceway and interior cameras throughout Radio City Music Hall. Online viewers can observe podium coverage, press tent coverage, behind-the-scenes interviews, and concerts by select artists.

With Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service, MTV.com users will receive reliable, broadcast-quality experiences via Akamai's global network of more than 4,200 servers located at the edges of the Internet close to end users. In addition to selecting Akamai for its expertise in streaming, MTVi is using Akamai's FreeFlowSM service to deliver the non-streaming content related to the broadcast to end users faster and more reliably.

Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service is built upon the Company's EdgeAdvantageSM platform that uses sophisticated algorithms to monitor the Internet on a real-time basis, understand the location of the requesting user, and make intelligent decisions about the best and most efficient Akamai edge server from which to deliver content to the end user. The FreeFlow Streaming service incorporates Akamai's proprietary SteadyStreamSM technology that sends multiple copies of the same stream to the edges of the Internet and then recombines the streams into the original high-quality format.
