New service to enable Lycos to deliver premium, dynamic and specialized content to end-users with enhanced reliability and efficiency

CAMBRIDGE, MA - October 18, 2000 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) today announced that Lycos, Inc. has signed on as the charter customer for Akamai's new dynamic page delivery service, EdgeSuiteSM — a full-site content delivery solution for e-businesses. Akamai unveiled the service today in a separate announcement.

Deploying Akamai's next-generation content delivery service enables Lycos to efficiently create dynamic and relevant content on a massive network infrastructure of distributed edge servers. Visitors to Lycos' Websites will benefit from dynamic page generation at the edge of the Internet by experiencing unparalleled performance and reliability in the delivery of specialized content.

Lycos, a current FreeFlowSM service customer, has been working closely with Akamai as the charter beta customer for dynamic page generation. Lycos plans to use this service to enable distributed content generation at the Internet's edge for the Lycos Network of properties including Lycos.com, Hotbot, and Gamesville.

"As the amount of Internet traffic grows and becomes more specialized, Lycos is creating a Web experience that meets each of our visitor's individual interests," said Tim Wright, Chief Information Officer, Lycos, Inc. "As a FreeFlow customer, we've seen first hand the power and the value of Akamai's network, technology and customer service across our full portfolio of products from MyLycos to Gamesville, Tripod to Matchmaker. EdgeSuite enables us to deliver much broader, more dynamic content with the speed and reliability we've come to expect from Akamai, while greatly lowering infrastructure maintenance costs."

Revolutionizing the next generation of Internet content delivery, EdgeSuite enables the delivery of all types of dynamic content. EdgeSuite gives content providers comprehensive, intelligent control over their content through an Akamaization process that is simple and transparent to end-users. With EdgeSuite, the content provider has the flexibility to control content cacheability, authentication, edge processing, fault tolerance, as well as other features.
