With EdgeSuite, Akamai attacks Web infrastructure cost reduction, by proposing to business users a content delivery suite ensuring total site availability and exceptional scalability.

Paris, April 6, 2001. Akamai Technologies, Inc., the leading Content Delivery Service Provider (CDSP), announces the launch of EdgeSuiteSM to help businesses reduce infrastructure costs and improve Web performance. EdgeSuite is a complete suite of edge services allowing companies to focus on their core business and minimize the costs associated with Web infrastructure, and to benefit from the resources of Akamai's world network of more than 9,700 servers, to deliver all types of Internet content all over the world with maximum reliability as close as possible to the users.

In addition to cutting costs, Akamai's world platform ensures companies uninterrupted availability of their Web sites, faster download rates and unparalleled flexibility. While leaving content providers total control over content, EdgeSuite offers a new level of delivery service by allowing all Web site content to be assembled, delivered and managed at the edge. It thereby facilitates creation and transmission of personalized static and dynamic content, by real-time optimization of the delivery of complex Web objects, HTML pages and media streaming on user stations according to geographical location.

"With the growing complexity of Web sites, content providers have to devote an increasing amount of resources to setting up and maintaining their infrastructure, often to the detriment of their core business," explains Bernard Seite, General Manager, Akamai France and Southern Europe. "EdgeSuite helps companies significantly reduce infrastructure investments by obviating the need to build costly data centers and mirroring sites, and purchase excess bandwidth. In addition, our service improves the performance of our customers' Web sites, who benefit from the assurance of total availability."

Akamai was a pioneer in content delivery with its outstanding FreeFlowSM and FreeFlowSM Streaming services that deliver voluminous objects such as images, banners and video and audio files over the Internet at high speed by selecting the optimal server for each user in terms of performance. With EdgeSuite, Akamai once again innovates by proposing a scalable turnkey edge solution meeting the needs of content providers and allowing them to focus on creating and promoting their product, meeting their targets and updating their backend databases.

EdgeSuite is the first system to provide application delivery functions at the edge of the Internet. Using Akamai's world network with thousands of local servers, EdgeSuite builds Web pages dynamically from an assembly of components that is personalized for each end user. EdgeSuite takes over these CPU resource-consuming assembly tasks from the host server, allowing the content providers to propose much richer specialized content and to deliver it much more efficiently. For instance, a News page may include articles personalized according to the reader's geographical location, a business site may give the address of the points of sale closest to the user, etc.

EdgeSuite supports delivery of all types of dynamic content, while giving the content provider the possibility of including personalization data and cookies on the pages. The service allows user behavior and location to be tracked and recorded in detail, page content to be refreshed at regular intervals or based on events and intelligent management of site content by a simple Akamaization process that is transparent to the site visitors.

This new suite of services is available immediately and offers 24//7 support for local and global load balancing of their site and intelligent content routing all over the world.
