Akamai to enhance dynamic content delivery, simplify infrastructure requirements for BestBuy.comTM

Cambridge, MA - June 11, 2001 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), the leading provider of distributed application and content delivery services, today announced that BestBuy.com, Inc. (BestBuy.com), a wholly owned subsidiary of Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY), has chosen the Akamai EdgeSuiteSM service to cost-effectively deliver its mission-critical Web content from the Internet's edge to maximize its customers' online experience.

In addition to its more than 400 retail stores nationwide, Best Buy has established a strong Web presence for the provision of its broad range of consumer goods as well as interactive, online learning courses on computer and digital technology products. By implementing the Akamai EdgeSuite service, BestBuy.com will be able to measurably enhance the performance and availability of its Web site, including the reliable delivery of dynamically generated content. In addition, the EdgeSuite service will enable BestBuy.com to simplify its front-end infrastructure by off-loading traffic to Akamai's globally distributed network and reducing utilization of its back-end servers.

"A large majority of our Web site is created with dynamic content," said Tom Mundt, director of Systems Operations, BestBuy.com. "The Akamai EdgeSuite service will enable us to more effectively cache that dynamic content on the edge of the Internet, thus reducing the response time for our customers and allowing us to scale back our front-end infrastructure."

The Akamai EdgeSuite service is an integrated set of functionalities designed to reduce Internet infrastructure costs and complexities by extending the performance, scalability, and reliability benefits of content delivery across an entire Web site. Akamai EdgeSuite enables the generation and delivery of dynamic content by constructing Web pages from component pieces that can be targeted and delivered from locations optimized for each end user. In addition to these benefits, the massive scalability of the Akamai network will allow for BestBuy.com's future online expansion without requiring additional equipment and costly build-out.

"We're thrilled to have further validation for EdgeSuite from a growing Internet authority like BestBuy.com, which places the utmost level of importance on its online brand," said Mike Campbell, vice president of sales, Akamai. "We look forward to working with BestBuy.com to minimize its infrastructure costs while providing greater performance and reliability at the Internet's edge."
