Former Acting Commissioner of Social Security and Advisor to the President to sit on Akamai Board

Cambridge, MA - August 3, 2001 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of distributed application and content delivery services, today announced the election of William A. Halter to its Board of Directors. Most recently, Mr. Halter served as Acting Commissioner of Social Security, as well as Senior Advisor in the White House's Office of Management and Budget. Halter has extensive experience working with the legislative and executive branches of the federal government, including roles leading the Social Security Administration, serving in the Office of Management and Budget, and as Chief Economist for the Senate Committee on Finance. With his tenure at McKinsey & Company specializing in the strategic planning and organizational effectiveness of Fortune 500 companies, Mr. Halter brings a wealth of knowledge to Akamai on the management and economics of large organizations.

"We are excited to welcome Bill to our Board of Directors and look forward to learning from his depth of experience in leading organizations that have helped shape this country's social, fiscal and political infrastructure," said George Conrades, chairman and CEO of Akamai. "With his work in Washington D.C., and relationship with today's leading policy-makers, we look forward to his guidance around issues affecting the Internet such as security, commerce, and standards. He will be an important addition to the Akamai team."

Commented Halter, "The success of business today depends largely on the sharing of information. Akamai is addressing this critical need by delivering a platform through which today's leading businesses, governmental organizations, universities, and other institutions can leverage the Internet for the efficient, reliable, and secure sharing of information."

As Deputy Commissioner and then Acting Commissioner of Social Security, Mr. Halter provided executive leadership and management of a Cabinet-level agency with 65,000 employees located in 1,500 offices across the United States. His responsibilities included overall operation and direction of one of the largest financial services organizations in the world serving all Americans and paying over $400 billion in retirement, disability, and survivors' benefits to over 50 million beneficiaries.

As part of his role with Social Security, Mr. Halter established and led initiatives to serve customers via the Internet. Social Security's web site now receives over 20 million visits annually.

Halter's work as Senior Advisor in the White House's Office of Management and Budget covered a range of policy and political issues, including review and evaluation of the budgets of federal departments and agencies, presentation of budget options to the President, and formulation of Administration positions on domestic and international policy issues.

Mr. Halter is a Rhodes Scholar and holds a Masters degree in Economics from Oxford University. He received an A.B. degree with Honors and Distinction in Economics and Political Science from Stanford University, where he is on the Board of Trustees.

Mr. Halter joins Akamai's Board of Directors following the departure of former Board member Edward Scott, founder and general partner, Baker Communications Fund.

"It was a privilege to have Ed as part of our initial group of founding Board members," said Conrades. "We appreciate the commitment, support, and sense of urgency that he provided Akamai during his years of service."
