Edge Side Includes (ESI) is Published as a W3C Note

CAMBRIDGE, MA - August 6, 2001 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of distributed application and content delivery services, today announced that the Edge Side Includes (ESI) specification has been published as a W3C Note, available at http://www.w3.org/TR.

ESI is a simple markup language used to define Web page components for dynamic assembly and delivery of Web applications at the network edge. Akamai is a co-author of the submission made to the W3C in May of this year. In addition to Akamai, leaders in the Application Server, Content Management Systems, and Content Delivery Networks markets took part in authoring the specification. ESI enables companies to develop Web applications once and choose at deployment time where the application should be assembled - on the application server, the content management system or the content delivery network, thus reducing complexity, development time and deployment costs.

The W3C intends to explore issues around the ESI Submission, and has referred it to the attention of the W3C's XML Protocol Working Group. Placing a Submission on a Working Group/Interest Group agenda does not imply endorsement by either the W3C Staff or the participants of the Working Group/Interest Group, nor does it guarantee that the Working Group/Interest Group will agree to take any specific action on a Submission.
