Telecommunications pioneer joins the Akamai Board

Cambridge, MA - September 18, 2001 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading provider of outsourced e-business infrastructure services and software, today announced the election of Leo J. Hindery, Jr. to its Board of Directors. Hindery has an extensive background in the telecommunications industry, including roles most recently as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GlobalCenter, Inc. and President and Chief Executive Officer of AT&T Broadband. He is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of "The YES Network", a new regional sports network formed around the broadcast rights of the New York Yankees, the New Jersey Nets and the New Jersey Devils, which will launch in March 2002 as a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week premier sports and entertainment network.

While at AT&T Broadband, Mr. Hindery oversaw all of AT&T's domestic video, local telephony and data services operations. AT&T Broadband was formed out of the 1999 merger between AT&T and Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI), then the world's largest cable television distribution and programming entity, of which Hindery was President since February of 1997. AT&T Broadband is now the country's largest provider of broadband services.

Along with his business accomplishments, Mr. Hindery has been the recipient of a multitude of awards, including an award for International Cable Executive of the Year in 1998. Also in 1998, Hindery received additional awards, including the Foundation Award of the International Radio & Television Society and the Executive Achievement Award of the National Association of Minorities in Cable. In 1999, Hindery was named cable television Operator of the Year and received from the National Cable Television Association its Distinguished Vanguard Award for Leadership. Also in 1999, Hindery was named by "Business Week" as one of the "Top 25 Executives of the Year".

Along with being a Director on Akamai's board, Mr. Hindery is also a member of the Board of Directors of GT Group Telecom Inc. and TD Waterhouse Group. Hindery is Vice Chairman of the Museum of Television & Radio; a Director of the Daniels Fund, the Library of Congress Trust Fund and Teach for America; and a member of the Stanford Business School Advisory Council.

Mr. Hindery is a graduate of Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, where he earned a master of business administration degree. His undergraduate work was done at Seattle University, where he graduated with honors.

Mr. Hindery joins Akamai's Board of Directors including George Conrades, chairman and CEO, Akamai; Art Bilger, vice-chairman; Tom Leighton, chief scientist, Akamai; Todd Dagres, general partner, Battery Ventures; and recently-elected members including William Halter, former acting commissioner of Social Security; and Ronald L. Graham, the Irwin and Joan Jacobs Endowed Chair of Computer and Information Science at the University of California at San Diego.
