Akamai's integrated Web infrastructure services, including content targeting, provide Terra Lycos with personalized Web site presentation for global user base

Cambridge, MA - November 6, 2001 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), the leading provider of outsourced e-business infrastructure services and software, today announced that Terra Lycos, the largest global Internet network, has broadly deployed the Akamai EdgeSuiteSM service as a key component of its global Web infrastructure - helping to provide top performance and reliability of dynamic content and on-demand capacity for its worldwide audience. Terra Lycos will also use the EdgeSuite Content Targeting functionality to help provide a highly customized end user experience.

"The traditional, centralized model of Web serving has shifted toward a decentralized approach that allows for a unique, customized Web experience without the prior performance and cost constraints," said Vince Russo, chief architect at Terra Lycos U.S. "Having carefully trialed the Akamai EdgeSuite service, we're extremely pleased to take full advantage of its integrated capabilities for excellent performance and reliability on a global scale. By outsourcing components of our Web infrastructure to the Akamai network, we're able to efficiently reach our worldwide users with timely, relevant content without over-provisioning our existing infrastructure."

Serving 103 million unique visitors per month in 43 countries, Terra Lycos requires flexible infrastructure that can readily scale to meet widely distributed user demands. The collective functionalities of the Akamai EdgeSuite service, including global traffic management, geo-location, and storage, will apply Akamai's real-time knowledge of Web conditions and intelligent routing technology to generate and deliver relevant content from the Internet's edge with less strain on Terra Lycos' origin servers. By off-loading the assembly and delivery of dynamic content to Akamai's network, Terra Lycos can avoid costly, international build-out of its existing infrastructure, and yet scale on demand as its audience grows.

Terra Lycos' use of EdgeSuite Content Targeting for geo-location and bandwidth characterization will help enable the delivery of customized content and applications to end users worldwide. This feature correlates geographic and network information to anonymous IP addresses, allowing the customization of content without compromising end user privacy. Akamai EdgeSuite enables the generation and delivery of dynamic content by constructing Web pages from component pieces that can be targeted and delivered from locations optimized for each end user.

"Terra Lycos has effectively acquired a rapidly-growing, global user base with its distinctive network of sites and quality service," said Michael Ruffolo, executive vice president, Akamai. "Akamai is committed to helping Web-enabled businesses like Terra Lycos take advantage of our global, in-place infrastructure for superior performance and massive scalability. We're excited to work with Terra Lycos to assist its expansive Web efforts and demonstrate the advantages of distributed Internet infrastructure."
