Akamai EdgeSuiteSM provides immediate performance and scalability benefits for CDC.gov; earns CDC high ranks on Keynote's Government 40 Performance Index

Cambridge, MA - January 22, 2002 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), a leading provider of secure, outsourced e-business infrastructure services and software, today announced that The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have implemented EdgeSuite to reduce IT complexity, expand its Internet infrastructure capacity and global reach, and improve overall site performance while ensuring effective delivery of all types of content on www.cdc.gov.

CDC plays a critical role in monitoring health, detecting and investigating health problems, and controlling the spread of diseases. As such, the cdc.gov site has become a crucial informant to the world at large, providing credible, up-to-date information to protect the public from the most widespread and deadly health threats. For instance, when the most recent concerns of anthrax were first made public in October 2001, CDC.gov experienced record traffic - over nine million unique visitors from more than 200 countries - as the public rushed to the site for health information.

To keep pace with the growing needs of its worldwide audiences and to uphold its highly regarded status, CDC's IT staff implemented Akamai EdgeSuite to ensure uninterrupted global Web operations, despite unpredictable flash crowds, and to provide assurance of uptime even in the event of potential equipment failures or denial of service attacks.

Since deploying EdgeSuite in December, CDC has witnessed measurable increases in its Web site's performance. This performance increase has enabled CDC.gov to consistently claim one of the top 5 positions on Keynote's weekly Government 40 Internet Performance Index - a first in CDC.gov's history. Also of benefit to CDC is EdgeSuite's ability to minimize capital expenditures associated with infrastructure capacity planning. By off-loading the assembly and delivery of its Web site to Akamai's globally distributed platform, CDC is able to avoid the costly build-out of its existing infrastructure, and yet leverage the Akamai platform to scale on demand as its audience grows.

"We're excited to begin a relationship with CDC, one of the most frequently visited Web sites in all tiers of government, and to assist its efforts in providing efficient, reliable delivery of health information to its global audiences," said Michael Ruffolo, executive vice president, global sales, services, and marketing, Akamai. "We look forward to helping CDC maintain its trusted reputation via EdgeSuite's ability to provide 100 percent availability of its Web operations while decreasing its e-business network deployment and operating costs."
