Akamai and Public Interactive Alliance Creates Success for Public Broadcasting's Move to the Internet
Public Interactive offers both public radio and public television stations a cost-effective range of private labeled, station-branded, Web-based services for a station's online/on-air community. Consistently ranked among the top five Arbitron® listings of audio network aggregators, Public Interactive began offering Akamai's streaming services to its network of station affiliates in April 2001. The Akamai and Public Interactive alliance combines Public Interactive's application solutions and Akamai's streaming media and audience measurement services for the delivery of live and on-demand audio and video public broadcasting programs. Public Interactive will expand its usage of Akamai's streaming services while supporting a rapidly growing base of both Internet radio listeners and an emerging online video base as well.
"Public radio and public television have a focus on service for their listeners, viewers, and members. The Internet clearly provides an opportunity to not only serve their existing audiences in new and exciting ways, but it also allows for the development of critical new listeners and viewers," said Gina Maniscalco, CEO, Public Interactive.
Since its formation, the relationship between the two companies has yielded more than 50 customers in the public broadcasting sector, including several of the nation's top radio and television stations such as Boston's own powerhouse stations, WBUR and WGBH; WNYC in New York City, the country's largest public radio station; and KERA, a joint radio/television station in Dallas. By taking advantage of Akamai's massively distributed global platform, public broadcasting stations are able to effectively distribute their programming across the Internet with unmatched performance, scalability, and reliability. In the aggregate, Public Broadcasting's affiliate stations now stream nearly 10 terabytes each month, representing a total of more than 1,000,000 listening hours.
"Akamai and Public Interactive are the perfect partners for WGBH in creating a compelling Web presence with an efficient and scalable Internet infrastructure, effectively enabling us to bridge the gap between listeners and producers in public radio," said Bob Lyons, director of WGBH Online, WGBH Boston. "The combined offering has helped WGBH to adopt the Internet as an effective medium for reaching broader audiences."
"The use of streaming media by the public broadcasting sector can greatly enhance the quality of online interaction between the viewer and the producer," said Michael Ruffolo, executive vice president, global sales, services, and marketing, Akamai. "The large number of clients that Akamai and Public Interactive have acquired confirms that the Internet has become a necessary medium to the on-going success of public broadcasting."
"Akamai is without question an organization focused not only on leading-edge technologies and cost-effective service delivery, but enhanced customer service as well. This has been critical to our public broadcasting affiliates and provides the foundation for our expanding relationship," Maniscalco continued.
