Organization deploys EdgeSuite to deliver new, traffic-intensive portal, www.interieur.gouv.fr, with highly secure and scalable infrastructure

Cambridge, MA - May 2, 2002 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), a leading provider of secure, outsourced e-business infrastructure services and software, today announced that the French Ministry of Interior has deployed the Akamai EdgeSuiteSM service to power the delivery of its new Web portal, www.interieur.gouv.fr, which launched on April 20th.

The new portal was designed to make the Ministry's communications more dynamic at the national level, especially during times of crisis; increase the level of interactivity with Internet users; and provide easier access to many information and e-administration services that will progressively be made available online. The Ministry therefore requires a Web infrastructure that can dynamically scale in accordance with end-user demand, especially during major events, and also supply the highest level of security and 100% availability. The Ministry's portal has become the leading source of information for official election results for the French population and international press. Following the recent, first round of presidential elections, the site recorded millions of page views in a matter of days.

"The French Ministry of Interior's portal is a public service site and therefore has a tremendous potential audience. The high standards we maintained during the first round of elections have allowed us to confirm our decision for a decentralized architecture based on Akamai's EdgeSuite service. The site is hosted by Matra Net Services and implemented by Fullsix," said Jerome Gruber, project manager and new technologies advisor to the French Ministry of Interior.

"We're extremely pleased to work with the French Ministry of Interior to ensure top reliability and availability of its new, mission-critical portal," said Bernard Seité, Akamai's general manager for France and southern Europe. "Akamai's comprehensive portfolio of market-leading services and massively deployed global platform have allowed us to become a trusted partner for government organizations both in the United States and in Europe."

About the French Ministry of Interior
For 200 years, the Ministry of Interior is at the center of French administration. It ensures the maintenance and cohesion of the country's institutions. Its organization, its human means and equipment comprise a privileged tool for the State, guaranteeing its citizens the exercise of rights, duties and liberties, and reaffirmed by the constitution of the fifth Republic. Its five missions are organized today around two main axes:

Administration of the territory - Ensure representation and permanence of the State for the overall national territory. Guarantee the integrity of public institutions; respect individual liberties and capabilities of territorial groups as part of decentralization.

Guarantee the security of its citizens and their possessions - Develop and respect the laws, guaranteeing its citizens the exercise of public liberties, notably for universal suffrage; protect the population against the risks or plague of any nature and against the consequences of a possible conflict.

These missions are fulfilled by the services associated with the minister, the general directorate, and the specialized directorates of the Ministry's central administration and ensured by the group of territories by the prefectures and sub-prefectures, the national police and civil security. These last mentioned groups are confronted with France's social realities, and closest to the expectations of the citizens, their activity bears witness to the devolution efforts undertaken by the State.
