CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - October 28, 2002 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), a provider of products and services that enable the world's leading enterprises and government agencies to extend and control their e-business infrastructure, today announced it has promoted William (Bill) E. Weihl to the role of Chief Technology Officer.

A veteran of Akamai's distinguished research and development organization, Mr. Weihl joined Akamai in 1999 and quickly emerged as a key leader in technology decisions across the company. In his new and expanded capacity as CTO, Weihl will continue to develop and articulate Akamai's technical vision and strategy for enabling customers to extend and control their e-business infrastructures across the global Akamai platform. He will report directly to George Conrades, Akamai's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.

"Bill has demonstrated his significant talents as a technologist and evangelist of Akamai's vision," said Conrades. "He has worked closely with customers to understand their requirements, while helping to drive our engineering priorities. I am confident in Bill's ability to ensure that Akamai remains responsive to our customers' evolving needs, including the exciting potential of distributed application processing."

Initially hired as a technical lead for Akamai's strategic technology partnerships, Weihl was soon appointed as Chief Architect for Akamai's Content Delivery Services organization. Working closely with Akamai Co-Founder and Chief Scientist Tom Leighton, Bill has played a major role in the design and development of many of Akamai's services, including customized offerings for enterprise and government accounts.

Prior to Akamai, Weihl was a Senior Consulting Engineer at Compaq's (formerly Digital's) Systems Research Center. He led the design and development of Digital's Continuous Profiling Infrastructure (DCPI), an innovation that has led to 19 issued patents, with several others still pending. Weihl has also served as a tenured associate professor of computer science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been recognized worldwide for his leadership in research on distributed and parallel computing, with notable results in transaction processing and parallel programming languages.
