Akamai Serves as Global Delivery Provider for Department of the Navy LIFELines Services Network
LIFELines (http://www.lifelines.navy.mil or www.lifelines.usmc.mil) is the official 'quality of life' service delivery network of the Department of the Navy, providing Sailors, Marines, and their families with a news, information, and communications platform for staying connected in an online and flexible meeting environment. As a common platform that enables deployed servicemembers to communicate with their families, LIFELines also creates a central destination for active duty and reserve personnel to seek assistance with support services, pay and benefits, transition assistance, housing, and employment, among other services.
Utilizing the Akamai EdgeSuite service for whole-site content and application delivery, content targeting, and business intelligence, LIFELines is able to support a global user base of U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps personnel who rely on the site for day-to-day correspondence and information gathering.
"The Department of Navy provides an extensive support system for its personnel and their families," said Major Ramon Lao, deputy directory, LIFELines. "It is critical that this site perform reliably, under often heavy traffic loads, for a user base that is located around the world. The Akamai network provides that necessary scale on-demand. As a result, we have been able to increase productivity through secure knowledge sharing, improve systems reliability and quality of service, and reduce the cost of data services."
The LIFELines Services Network (LSN) is part of an overall initiative by the Department of the Navy aimed at enhancing system interoperability and portability. As LIFELines expands to provide users with access to integrated e-mail, voicemail, calendaring, file sharing, search, and real-time collaboration capabilities from popular desktop clients, Web browsers and a wide range of wireless devices including PDAs, phones, and voice handsets, the importance of IP technologies and Web Services innovation continues to increase.
States Major Lao, "Akamai provides an enabling technology in which we see tremendous potential for additional projects. Akamai's commitment to industry standard protocols, and technology that allows for the distribution of more business logic and computing to take place closer to end users, is consistent with how we see our IT processes developing. Our goal is to apply the speed and might of world-class Internet technologies to everything from administrative tasks to transactional services."
"We are fortunate to have an extensive partnership with the official Marine Corps website, www.usmc.mil, and several other DOD and DON applications," continues Major Lao. "Our goal is to position the Marine Corps' Web operations to realize the costs benefits of Akamai's content delivery network methodology. Bandwidth usage is an existing concern throughout the Department of the Navy, particularly with the continued rollout of the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). However, decreased bandwidth usage is a byproduct of Akamai services, which benefits LSN users and the Department of the Navy. Upon visiting www.lifelines.navy.mil, users quickly realize how our application is rich with attractive and vibrant content. Performance improvements, particularly to customer service, are self-evident as a direct result of Akamai's service offerings."
"The Department of the Navy has created a unique information source with LIFELines, providing a wide range of services to a diverse audience. We are excited to play a role in helping to enable their progressive vision for leveraging IP technologies," said Michael Ruffolo, executive vice president, Global Sales, Services and Marketing, Akamai. "With the use of EdgeSuite as a scalable extension to its Web infrastructure, the LIFELines Services Network provides ubiquitous access to information, where it's needed, when it's needed, without worry."
The Akamai EdgeSuite service enables the generation and delivery of dynamic content by constructing Web pages from component pieces that can be targeted and delivered from locations optimized for each end user. Given today's challenged IT budgets, the EdgeSuite service allows businesses to cost-effectively extend their critical Web infrastructure across Akamai's global network, while retaining control of the business intelligence necessary to provide the optimal user experience.
Additional government agencies that currently rely on Akamai include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Defense, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Government Printing Office, the U.S. House Financial Services Committee, and the Voice of America, among others.
