EdgeComputingSM delivers on-demand Internet infrastructure to support online polling and sweepstakes entries for TLC's newest special, TRADING SPACES: HOME FREE

Cambridge, Mass. - March 8, 2004 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), the global leader in distributed computing solutions and services, today announced that TLC, a network of Discovery Communications, Inc. (DCI), the leading global real-world media and entertainment company, has selected the Akamai EdgeComputing service for its newest television special, TRADING SPACES: HOME FREE, that premiered on Sunday, March 7.

TRADING SPACES: HOME FREE pits neighbor against neighbor in an elimination-style tournament to win having their mortgage paid off. Each week, homeowners will go head-to-head in unexpected challenges that test their design mettle, perseverance and personal styles. Viewers will vote through a toll-free number, text message on their mobile phone, and online for their favorite neighbors to move to the next round. As part of the special series, TLC will engage its online viewers by offering a chance to win their mortgage in a parallel online sweepstakes, which can be accessed by going to Discovery.com and clicking on TLC.

Requiring the assurance of 100% response to users during the duration of the new series, TLC turned to Akamai's EdgeComputing capabilities to provide a positive user experience through fast performance and reliable availability during this highly anticipated program.

"In trying to anticipate the volume of viewer response to our new TRADING SPACES: HOME FREE special, scalability was incredibly important to us," said Bill Allman, SVP and General Manager of Discovery Interactive Media at Discovery US Networks. "Akamai's EdgeComputing service will ensure that the applications we are launching will be available, and are high-performing, regardless of where, when and how often they are being accessed."

EdgeComputing is an evolution of Akamai's market-leading content and application delivery services and enables a business' Java application code to run at the edge points of a massively distributed network. Akamai's global network is comprised of more than 14,000 distributed servers, providing customers with on-demand scale and application computing capacity when and where they are needed.

"We are excited to play a vital role in TLC's online launch of its new TRADING SPACES: HOME FREE online competition," said Michael Ruffolo, chief operating officer of Akamai. "By making it easier and cost-effective to deploy and maintain applications online, Akamai is enabling TLC to leverage the Internet to touch their loyal consumer base with innovative programming and promotions."
