Keith E. Johnson of Akamai Receives Federal 100 Award
The Federal 100 is given to top executives from government, industry, and academia that played pivotal roles in the federal information technology community. The awards recognize the successes of individuals who made a noticeable difference in an agency or in the community at large. In some cases, people make a difference by going above and beyond their job descriptions to ensure that a project succeeds. Or, they make their mark through innovation - coming up with new and better ways of tackling problems.
Mr. Johnson was recognized for his role in bringing the technology to bear that allowed the National Weather Service (NWS) to extend its Internet infrastructure to meet the historic online demands for information brought about by Hurricane Isabel, which ravaged the East Coast in September 2003. Under the direction of Mr. Johnson, Akamai responded to the NWS' request to support the delivery of its weather sites, including www.noaa.gov, www.nhc.noaa.gov, www.ssd.noaa.gov, and www.noaanews.noaa.gov. Within hours, the Akamai platform was delivering the NWS sites without flaw, providing scalability on demand to support landmark levels of end-user requests for information about Hurricane Isabel's progress and necessary precautions. Throughout the crisis, the NWS sites remained fully operational, providing end users and news outlets with critical details about the storm.
